The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) strongly condemned an assault against one of its officers by a commercial driver in the Ojota Interchange area of Lagos.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment for LASTMA, the incident occurred on Sunday, February 15, 2026, when the driver st@bbed the officer in his right hand fingers using a broken bottle.
The statement revealed that the driver resisted arrest and tried to escape by driving onto the road median before the vehicle eventually stopped.
The driver allegedly grabbed a jagged piece of glass from the bus and attacked the enforcement officers, wounding one prior to fleeing the location.
“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) over the weekend expressed its strongest disapproval regarding a heinous and deliberate attack carried out by a defiant commercial bus driver at Ojota Interchange in Lagos,” the statement declared.
The incident involved a painted Caravelle GL Volkswagen commercial bus with the registration EKY 693 YK, which was stopped for violating traffic regulations. The bus was being operated on the Ojota–Ketu route, and its passenger door was carelessly left open, posing a serious risk to both passengers and other road users.
Upon being stopped, the driver displayed blatant disrespect by resisting arrest and attempted perilous escape by driving onto the median.
His escape was thwarted when the bus became immobilised. Frustrated by the failed getaway, he resorted to extreme violence.
In a shocking act, the driver seized a broken bottle from the bus and viciously stabbed one officer in the fingers of his right hand.
The attack resulted in severe injuries, including fractures and major blood loss, before the assailant fled the scene. Despite his escape, the involved vehicle was promptly impounded in accordance with legal standards.
The injured officer was quickly transported to a medical facility for emergency surgery. Due to the serious nature of the fractures, two fingers required immediate reconstruction, and he is currently under close medical supervision.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed his deep anger and firmly condemned the unacceptable act.
He reiterated that the occurrence is currently under thorough investigation by law enforcement agencies, and measures are being taken to ensure the perpetrator is captured and prosecuted.
Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized that any violence against traffic enforcement officials represents a direct attack on lawful authority and civil order.
He urged commercial transport operators to comply with traffic regulations, warning that the Authority will continue to step up enforcement efforts to protect public safety and maintain order in Lagos State.
“The Agency is committed to its statutory role of ensuring discipline, orderliness, and a smooth traffic flow throughout the city. Any acts of lawlessness and violent resistance will be met with a firm and unyielding lawful response.”
