The Edo State Police Command has reported the successful arrest of two individuals suspected of kidnapping, in addition to thwarting a separate kidnapping incident in the state.
Muhammed Muamadu Haruna, aged 35, and Abubakar Muhammed Haruna, aged 25, were taken into custody by the police, acting in concert with local vigilante groups, on the Auchi–Igarra Highway within the Etsako West Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson indicated that the suspects were intercepted by a police team while on duty along the highway.
According to the spokesperson, a vigilante member recognised the duo as part of a kidnapping syndicate that had previously been involved in shootouts with security forces during a joint operation to comb bushes and rescue victims.
Upon recognition, the suspects attempted to flee into the adjacent forest but were promptly intercepted and apprehended.
In a parallel operation on the same Auchi–Igarra road, the police also disrupted an active kidnapping attempt. The kidnappers fled into the forest upon spotting the security operatives, leaving behind items believed to be supplies for their criminal activities.
The recovered items included foodstuffs, mobile phones, knives, and other personal belongings.
The spokesperson further stated that a search operation is currently underway in the area to locate and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
