EFCC Interrogates Trader Over Alleged Currency Forgery in Enugu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into a 31-year-old trader, Oduburu Lucy Oluchi, who was apprehended for allegedly handling counterfeit currency worth N192,000. The suspect was arrested while trying to make purchases with the fake notes.

Officials from the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have launched an investigation into the activities of a 31-year-old trader, identified as Oduburu Lucy Oluchi, also known as Eze Chiamaka Lucy, who was found in possession of counterfeit currency amounting to N192,000.

According to a statement from the agency, Oluchi was arrested on December 23, 2025, at the Eke Nibo market located in the Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State by other traders while she was attempting to buy goods.

Upon her apprehension, she was transferred to the Agunechemba Quasi Security outfit (Vigilante) and subsequently handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS).

After receiving the suspect from the DSS on December 29, 2025, the commission discovered that she was in possession of fake One Thousand Naira notes totaling the stated amount, which included six distinct serial numbers:

\- Twenty-five (25) notes with serial number A/33 334233;

\- Thirty (30) notes with serial number B/33 334432;

\- Fifty-one (51) notes with serial number A/83 353504;

\- Forty-three (43) notes with serial number A/29 894433;

\- Forty-two (42) notes with serial number A/29 894434;

\- One (1) note with serial number A29/ 898248.

The EFCC reported that this act contravenes Section 151 of the Criminal Code and Sections 4 and 5 of the Counterfeit Currency (Special Provisions) Act.

Further, the agency indicated that the suspect will face charges in court once the investigations are completed.
