A witness for the prosecution has informed an FCT High Court that $2 million was confiscated from the legal representative of Godwin Emefiele, previously the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
David Jaiyeoba, who is affiliated with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), testified on Thursday that Collins Omeife, the lawyer in question, admitted during interrogation that the cash was indeed owned by Mr. Emefiele.
In his testimony, Jaiyeoba stated that Omeife acknowledged he regularly received funds from Emefiele's personal assistant, Eric Ocheme.
According to Jaiyeoba, the money was allocated for the acquisition of properties and the refurbishment of existing assets owned by Emefiele.
He detailed several properties related to the case, which include detached duplexes located at No. 17B Hakeem Odumosu Street, Lekki Phase 1 in Lagos; a bungalow, alongside undeveloped land measuring 1919.592 square meters on Oyinkan Abayomi Drive in Ikoyi; and a four-bedroom duplex at 12A Probyn Road, Ikoyi.
Additional properties mentioned encompass an industrial complex under construction on 22 plots in Agbor, Delta State; eight separate apartments on Adekunle Lawal Road, Ikoyi, Lagos; as well as a detached duplex on Bank Road, Ikoyi.
The EFCC filed charges against Emefiele in June 2023, which included 20 amended counts involving criminal breach of trust, forgery, procurement fraud, conspiracy to commit forgery, and other related offenses.
The accusations also encompass claims of an alleged fraudulent disbursement of $6.23 million from the CBN vault in Abuja in 2023, presented under the pretense of covering costs for fictitious expenses of foreign election observers.
Mr. Emefiele has firmly denied all allegations against him.
