The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Prof. Eghosa Osagie, has characterized President Bola Tinubu's state visit to the United Kingdom as a vital diplomatic effort aimed at solidifying strategic partnerships and re-establishing Nigeria's position in a swiftly evolving global landscape.

In an interview with ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, Osagie noted that this visit is particularly timely given the global climate of uncertainty, highlighting the necessity for nations like Nigeria to strengthen ties with longstanding allies such as the UK.

"We are witnessing rapid transitions around the world, some may refer to it as turbulence or uncertainty. We are undergoing a transformation into a new world order. It is essential now to build upon the strong foundations of our relationships and reassure ourselves of the solid ground we stand on with our close allies and friends," he stated.

Osagie emphasized Nigeria's deep-rooted historical connections with the United Kingdom across various domains including diplomacy, culture, defense, and trade, asserting that both countries serve as essential partners for one another.

"Nigeria enjoys a rich history with the United Kingdom. This is a pivotal moment for friends, allies, and partners to recognize their bonds. The UK stands as a strong pillar for Nigeria, and vice versa," he said.

He pointed out that the significance of this visit extends beyond ceremonial aspects, noting its geopolitical importance, particularly since it marks the first state visit of an African leader since King Charles III's accession to the throne.

"This visit is highly consequential. It reaffirms Nigeria’s recognition as a notable center of global power. It is worth mentioning that this is the inaugural state visit by any African head of state under the reign of King Charles," Osagie remarked.

Investment, as he detailed, is a primary focal point of Nigeria’s dealings with the UK, especially with the nation aspiring to achieve a $1 trillion economy by the year 2030.

"Investment is key, key, and key. This is crucial for reinforcing Nigeria’s path toward a $1 trillion economy by 2030," he stated.

He also acknowledged the progress of Nigeria’s economic reforms, which are actively drawing attention from foreign investors in efforts to enhance the business climate.

"Foreign investors are recognizing the substantial steps being taken. The first step is to secure agreements—whether through MOUs or other forms—before we can begin to realize those agreements," he explained.

Osagie highlighted that industries such as fintech, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and the creative sector offer immense opportunities for collaboration between Nigeria and the UK.

"We have strengths in fintech, AI, a resilient young population, and a vibrant creative economy. These present significant opportunities, and the UK is becoming familiar with Nigeria's dynamic environment," he added.

He further underscored the importance of enhancing defense collaborations, especially given the security challenges Nigeria faces.

"Historically, the Nigerian military has been one of the British military's closest allies. In times of insecurity, it becomes vital to renew and expand the scope of this collaboration," he commented.

Regarding reparations, especially in light of a Nigerian court ruling for compensation linked to the 1949 Iva Valley massacre, Osagie acknowledged its significance but suggested it may not be a focal point of discussion during the visit.

"The issue of reparations will never be disregarded. Moral and ethical considerations have prompted nations like the UK to issue apologies previously. These historical grievances cannot simply be ignored," he stated.

"We seek retributive justice. Independence was achieved through sacrifices, which should be acknowledged and compensated. However, I remain uncertain whether this topic will be addressed during this visit," he remarked.

Osagie also highlighted President Tinubu's worldly background as beneficial for advancing Nigeria’s diplomatic objectives.

"We are witnessing perhaps the first Nigerian president who has received education abroad. His global perspective is mirrored in his foreign policy approaches," he said.

"From travels to Germany, France, Turkey, and now the UK, this demonstrates a strong dedication to fostering partnerships with key global powers. He embodies the role of a cosmopolitan diplomat," he concluded.

He asserted that Nigeria stands to reap substantial benefits from the president’s global engagement strategy.

"Nigeria can greatly benefit from this path—focusing on maintaining good relations, neighborliness, and strong international partnerships," he emphasized.

The president is anticipated to arrive in the UK as discussions around diplomatic and economic matters escalate, with both countries eager to enhance collaboration across significant sectors.
