Gunmen unleashed gunfire at a soccer field situated in central Mexico on Sunday, leaving a minimum of eleven individuals deceased and twelve others wounded, according to reports from local authorities.
Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto stated that the assailants arrived as a football game was drawing to a close and commenced shooting at those present. Ten fatalities were recorded at the location, with an eleventh victim succumbing to their injuries later at the hospital. Among those injured were a woman and a minor.
In a communication disseminated via social media, Prieto characterized the shooting as an escalation of the pervasive criminal violence affecting the city. He issued an appeal to President Claudia Sheinbaum, requesting federal intervention to reinstate safety and safeguard the populace.
The prosecutor’s office for the state of Guanajuato has announced the commencement of an inquiry and indicated that it is collaborating with federal agencies to bolster security in the region.
Guanajuato registered the highest homicide count in Mexico last year, attributed to the ongoing conflict between the local Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the formidable Jalisco New Generation Cartel over territorial control.
Notwithstanding the recent attack, the Mexican government asserts that the national murder rate experienced a decline in 2025, reaching its lowest point since 2016. However, certain analysts caution that official statistics might not fully represent the extent of the persistent violence.
