Elon Musk has stated that obtaining medical qualifications will soon be unnecessary as AI-enabled robots are poised to surpass human surgeons.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX asserted that advanced humanoid robots like Tesla's Optimus are expected to excel beyond the globe's top surgeons within the next three years.
During an episode of the Moonshots podcast led by Peter Diamandis, Musk discussed the sluggish training of human doctors, their tendency for error, and their inherent limitations.
"At present, there is a deficiency of physicians and skilled surgeons," Musk remarked.
"It takes an extensive amount of time to master the skills required to be an effective doctor. Physicians have limited availability, and mistakes are made. How many truly exceptional surgeons are there? Not many," he continued.
When Diamandis prompted, "So should individuals avoid enrolling in medical school?" Musk replied, "Yes. It's pointless."
This isn’t Musk's first prediction regarding the obsolescence of human surgeons. As early as April 2025, he suggested that robots would soon dominate surgical procedures, referencing Neuralink’s robot, which raises ultra-thin electrodes in the human brain with a level of accuracy that is challenging for human hands to replicate.
While the field of robotic surgery is making rapid advancements, specialists caution that the medical profession relies heavily on human judgment, accountability, and ethical considerations.

Elon Musk on AI and robotics impact on medical care:
"Everyone will have access to medical care that surpasses the quality the president currently receives. Hence, if asked if one should avoid medical school? Yes, it's pointless."
The tweet from Tesla Owners Silicon Valley highlighted this point in January 2026.
