A citizen involved in the EndSARS protests has finally regained his freedom after spending more than five years in detention.
Rasheed Wasiu was released on Wednesday, March 4, after a case dismissal by a court in Lagos.
The Lagos-based advocacy organization, the Take It Back Movement, made an announcement regarding Wasiu's release.
The movement characterized his freedom as a major advancement in their ongoing campaign aimed at securing the release of individuals arrested during the protests that occurred over several days in October 2020.
In a statement, the group declared, "Today marks another significant milestone in our continuous fight for justice, as the case against Rasheed Wasiu has been officially dismissed, allowing him to finally return to freedom."
They further stated, "This outcome reinforces our conviction that perseverance, unity, and dedication to justice will ultimately yield positive results."
The organization highlighted that through persistent advocacy, legal efforts, and public pressure, they have helped in the release of other detainees associated with the protest, including individuals such as Sunday Okoro, Olumide Fatai, Oluwole Yisa, Daniel Joyibo, Adigun Sodiq, Kehinde Shola, Salaudeen Kamilu, Sodiq Usseni, and Azeez Isiaka.
A commendation was also given to a legal representative known as Barrister Taiwo of Citizens Gavel, who stepped in for Wasiu after the untimely death of human rights attorney Adeshina Ogunlana.
"His dedication, professionalism, and relentless pursuit of justice were crucial in achieving this positive result," the statement emphasized.
Additionally, the group paid homage to the late Ogunlana, acknowledging that his efforts and commitment provided a solid foundation for the ultimate success of the case.
"We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to advocate for victims of injustice and hold institutions responsible. Our fight continues until justice is pursued and fully realized for everyone," the organization concluded.
