Taiwo Awoniyi, the Super Eagles striker, has caught the eye for his heartfelt expression of faith after scoring in Nottingham Forest's impressive 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Making his appearance in the second half under manager Vitor Pereira, Awoniyi capped off Forest’s victory with a composed goal from a cross by Neco Williams, which marked his return to scoring after a two-month drought.

Shortly after the match, Awoniyi shared a post on Instagram, framing the goal in spiritual terms, reflecting on his faith during this challenging period in his career.

Awoniyi quoted a passage from the Bible, stating, "For who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?" from Ecclesiastes 3:22 KJV, emphasizing his belief in God’s omnipresence.

In his post he added, “There’s only one true God, and over the years, whether in good or bad times, 1 Corinthians 8:6 🙏🏿 He’s undoubtedly the GREATEST 🙏🏿,” while expressing gratitude for the support he received.

As of this report, his post garnered over 35,000 reactions, drawing responses from fellow Nigerian footballers like Kelechi Iheanacho, Odion Ighalo, Joe Aribo, and his Nottingham teammate Neco Williams, who assisted him in scoring.

Celebration Controversy

Awoniyi’s goal celebration mirrored his online message, as he removed his shirt to reveal an undershirt that read “God is the Greatest,” after scoring. This action, however, resulted in a yellow card from the referee due to FIFA regulations that penalize players for removing their shirts during celebrations. Furthermore, the law prohibits the display of personal, political, or religious slogans during play.

Crucial Goal in Survival Battle

The goal itself was not only timely but essential for Nottingham Forest in their ongoing battle against relegation. Awoniyi, who had been absent from the scoresheet for a significant duration, finally found his form, securing an important victory for the club. This marked his 20th goal for Nottingham Forest, potentially proving vital in their struggle to remain in the Premier League.

Awoniyi’s celebration, both on the field and online, was a mixture of relief and reaffirmation of his faith after enduring injuries and a lack of playtime. While the yellow card underscored the strict enforcement of celebration regulations in football, his message resonated with fans and teammates alike.

The win certainly bolstered Forest’s chances of avoiding relegation, while for Awoniyi, it signified a moment of rediscovery defined by both purpose and impact.
