Equatorial Guinea has formally transitioned its capital city from Malabo to Ciudad de La Paz following a decree by the president.
The initiative to relocate the capital, previously situated on Bioko Island, which is distanced from the mainland, has been contemplated for nearly twenty years.
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo stated that the rationale for this change was based on strategic considerations.
Additionally, the urban expansion of Malabo played a significant role in the decision to shift the capital to the central area of the Equatorial forest on the mainland.
As specified in the decree, it is anticipated that presidential services, governmental agencies, and public enterprises will move from Malabo within the next year.
However, the decree does not clarify whether foreign embassies will also relocate to the new capital.
