Muhammed Badaru, the former Minister of Defence, has clarified the purpose of his recent meetings with opposition leaders in Jigawa State, as rumors circulate about a possible defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports by PREMIUM TIMES highlighted Badaru’s engagement with various political figures, which raised questions about his intentions within his home state.

In one week alone, he met twice with Mustapha Lamido, the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 and the son of seasoned politician Sule Lamido, who is rumored to be contemplating joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Additionally, Mr. Badaru has had discussions with Ubale Shitu, a former senator and current ADC stalwart in the state, as well as Sule Lamido himself, with whom he has had a strained relationship since a contentious incident in 2017 that resulted in Lamido’s detention.

According to his media aide, Mati Ali, the former minister’s interactions primarily aimed at rallying support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign. Ali stated that these meetings were essential to fostering solidarity within the APC in Jigawa and the wider North-West region as the 2027 general elections approach.

Ali noted that since returning from his overseas vacation in February 2026, Badaru has intensified his efforts to enhance party unity, grassroots mobilization, and momentum towards the 2027 elections. He emphasized Badaru's focus on supporting the re-election of President Tinubu and promoting the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Critically, Ali expressed concern about certain APC officials who, due to internal conflicts and personal agendas, have diverted attention from essential governance issues and political strategy

leading up to the elections.

He affirmed Badaru’s commitment to the president: “Despite the challenges, Badaru Abubakar remains dedicated to unifying stakeholders and mobilizing support for President Tinubu’s administration.”

Evidence of this commitment was on display when he returned to Babura, his hometown, to receive his validated APC membership registration card, during which he reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. The sizable turnout at this event highlighted strong grassroots backing.

Recognizing the importance of a collective approach to political success, Badaru extended his discussions beyond party lines, hosting influential political leaders from various backgrounds at his residences in Abuja and Kano.

Among the attendees were Mustapha Sule Lamido, the former PDP gubernatorial candidate in Jigawa; Senators Sabo Mohammed Nakudu and Ubali Shitu; and Mallam Aminu Ibrahim Ringim, who had contested gubernatorial elections under both the PDP and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). He also visited former Governor Sule Lamido in Kano.

These high-profile meetings reflect Badaru’s dedication to fostering dialogue, mutual respect, and collective efforts aimed at advancing national development and strengthening support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Badaru’s influence extends across state lines, having played a crucial role as the Regional Coordinating Chairman (North) of the APC's 2023 Presidential Campaign Council. His leadership was pivotal in President Tinubu’s electoral success, securing approximately 45.8% of valid votes cast in Jigawa and contributing to a significant total of 2,652,235 votes across the North-West region.

As the 2027 elections draw near, Badaru is determined to promote unity, reinforce democratic values, and galvanize widespread support to ensure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s sustained success and the advancement of Nigeria’s development agenda.
