Ayodeji Awenebi, who is no longer with the police force, has been presented before the Akure Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State. He faces a singular charge related to the alleged defilement of a 6-year-old child.

The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nelson Akintimehin, informed the court that the alleged offense took place on November 30, 2025, within the Ode Community, Isingbo, falling under the court's jurisdiction.

Akintimehin further stated that the defendant, identified as 25 years old, is accused of unlawfully engaging in the act with the minor without her consent.

This alleged act, according to the prosecutor, is in contravention of Section 22 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The defendant entered a plea of not guilty to the charge presented against him.

Counsel for the defendant, A.O. Odidiomo, requested an adjournment from the court, citing health concerns.

He also petitioned the court to grant his client bail under lenient conditions. Odidiomo emphasized that despite the seriousness of the accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent as per Section 35 of the law, until proven guilty.

Furthermore, the defense counsel assured the court that the defendant would not pose a flight risk and would not interfere with the ongoing investigation or any potential witnesses.

In his decision, Chief Magistrate Sunday Adedapo approved bail for the defendant, setting the amount at N750,000 with one surety who must also provide a sum of the same value.

The court stipulated that the surety must reside within the court's jurisdiction and possess landed property in Akure.

The matter has been adjourned to April 30 for further proceedings.
