The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the formation of a task force consisting of various stakeholders focused on enhancing the cargo logistics chain at airports under its purview.
In a statement released on Saturday, FAAN shared details of this significant development.
This initiative is being spearheaded by FAAN's Directorate of Cargo Development and Services as part of an ongoing commitment to implement effective operational, commercial, and regulatory frameworks for cargo operations across Nigerian airports.
FAAN's Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, has officially established two committees comprising officials from crucial departments within the authority.
Members of the newly formed task force will represent sectors including finance, legal services, commercial operations, aviation security, airport operations, and the cargo directorate.
The organization states that this diverse structure is designed to ensure that the policies governing cargo logistics are in alignment with the operational realities within the aviation industry.
One of the primary responsibilities of the committee involves creating standardized operating procedures (SOPs) for cargo activities at FAAN-managed airports. In this regard, cargo warehouse operators, terminal operators, ground handling service providers, and pertinent government entities have been requested to provide their current operational procedures.
The objective, as outlined by FAAN, is to assess and harmonize these procedures to implement a more consistent framework for cargo management tasks.
Draft versions of these SOPs have already been dispatched to ground handling corporations for their preliminary review. Following this initial stage, further internal assessment will be undertaken by the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services.
FAAN is also in the process of formulating Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with governmental agencies that together form the backbone of cargo operations at airports.
These agreements are intended to clarify roles, responsibilities, and operational conditions for the agencies involved in the cargo ecosystem.
In addition, FAAN’s Directorate of Legal Services is orchestrating the establishment of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with airline operators. These contracts will serve to delineate operational expectations between FAAN and the airline companies that offer cargo services.
The authority maintains that these initiatives are part and parcel of its comprehensive strategy to enhance cargo operations across all airports it oversees, with the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services at the forefront of overseeing this ongoing process.
