The Plateau State Police Command has announced the apprehension of a man impersonating a soldier amidst the ongoing disturbances in Jos, the state capital. The suspect was reportedly taken to the state police headquarters for further processing.
Sources indicate the individual was apprehended around Angwan Rukuba, an area that had previously been affected by violence where casualties were reported. The spokesperson for the command, Alabo Alfred, confirmed the arrest, stating the suspect was found in possession of a forged Nigerian Military School (NMS) identity card.
Alfred further revealed that five additional persons were detained earlier on Wednesday in connection with the unrest that gripped parts of Jos. These individuals are described as criminals who allegedly used the prevailing tension as an opportunity to engage in illegal activities such as bag and money snatching, particularly in the Terminus district.
He added that security forces were rapidly deployed as the situation escalated, successfully dispersing the unruly elements and re-establishing order. Enhanced security measures have since been implemented across vital locations, including educational institutions and other strategic areas, to safeguard citizens and their property.
The police spokesperson urged residents to maintain calm while remaining alert. He also encouraged the public to report any unusual movements or suspicious actions to the relevant security agencies.
