A 23-year-old man has received a life sentence for murdering his three-week- old son in Driekoppies, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Sibusiso Patrick Shongwe was found guilty by the High Court in Mpumalanga for the death of his baby boy, which took place in March 2023.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that Shongwe initially contested his paternity when the child's mother, Noluthando Mlambo, announced her pregnancy, even pressuring her to end it.

On March 1, 2023, Shongwe arranged to meet Mlambo and the baby, under the pretext of wanting to bring supplies for the child.

Upon their meeting on the street, he sent the child's grandmother away, creating an opportunity for him. Shortly after, three unidentified men confronted Mlambo, permitting Shongwe to abduct the infant and flee the scene.

The child's remains were located in nearby bushes two days following the incident.

An autopsy indicated that the infant succumbed to sharp-force trauma to the neck.

Throughout the trial, Shongwe denied involvement in the child's disappearance. However, compelling evidence, including witness accounts and his own confession presented by State Advocate Senzo Zindela, contradicted his claims.

The court proceedings highlighted that Shongwe exhibited no signs of remorse for his actions.

When delivering the sentence, the judge referred to the alarming rate of violent crime in South Africa and a growing disregard for human life.

Determining that no sufficient grounds existed to warrant a departure from the mandatory sentence, the judge imposed life imprisonment. Shongwe was also deemed unfit to hold a firearm, and his request for permission to appeal was turned down.
