FCT Collaboration with Finland on Smart City Initiatives and Waste Management

The administration of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has indicated its intention to partner with the Republic of Finland to improve infrastructure, sustainable urban management, and agricultural practices in Abuja.

During a meeting with Sanna Selin, the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike made this announcement.

The discussions highlighted a shared commitment to strengthen diplomatic relations and innovate technical collaborations in line with the current administration's 'Renewed Hope' agenda.

Wike pointed out the rapid growth observed in Abuja and the ongoing transformation initiatives that involve substantial construction efforts, expressing interest in leveraging Finland's capabilities in various specialized fields.

"As a city, we are open to collaborating with international counterparts to enhance our infrastructure and agricultural sectors," he mentioned.

He further noted Finland's readiness to assist in infrastructure development, smart city technology, and green energy solutions. "We are eager to engage with you in these significant areas," Wike affirmed.

Additionally, the minister reassured the diplomatic community about the improvements in security within the FCT, emphasizing the administration's dedication to ensuring a welcoming environment for international partners.

A significant focus of the meeting was on modernizing waste management systems, with Wike inviting competent companies to collaborate with the administration on effective waste management solutions.

"We would appreciate discussions regarding waste management with any capable firm; addressing this issue is very important for us," he expressed.

In her remarks, Ambassador Selin noted that recent months have witnessed a strengthening of trade ties and digital developments between Nigeria and Finland.

"Finland ranks among the top digitized countries globally, and we have recently formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nigeria to deepen our cooperation in digital transformation and innovation," she stated.

She expressed hope that Finland’s innovative solutions, especially from its capital region, could be effectively translated to practical projects in the FCT, thereby enhancing economic cooperation and technical collaboration between the two nations.
