The Federal Government has given the green light for the establishment of a Metropolitan Rail Service in Kano State, with an investment of ₦1 trillion.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State shared the news during his address to the state delegation that took part in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition recently held in Borno State.

The governor stated that this rail initiative is aimed at transforming public transport within the Kano metropolis by creating a modern, effective, and budget-friendly mass transit network that will link various vital districts throughout the city.

He emphasized that this initiative is expected to greatly alleviate traffic congestion, enhance mobility for city residents, promote commerce, and draw in potential investments to the state.

Governor Yusuf characterized this project as a significant federal initiative that will redefine Kano as a strategic transportation and commercial center in Northern Nigeria.

He also attributed the project’s approval to his administration’s recent alignment with the Federal Government, which is led by the All Progressives Congress (APC). He noted that this alignment is intended to attract essential development initiatives to the region.

"Our decisions have been motivated by the necessity to expedite development and secure significant interventions that will dramatically improve the lives of our citizens," stated the governor.

He assured that the Kano State Government would collaborate closely with pertinent federal bodies to ensure the project is executed transparently and efficiently, maximizing its benefits.

Expressing gratitude to the Federal Government for approving this rail service, Governor Yusuf reiterated his government's commitment to furthering federal efforts through supportive policies and infrastructural improvements.
