The Nigerian Federal Government has sanctioned the procurement of electric buses designated for civil servants, aligning with initiatives to foster sustainable transportation and boost local manufacturing capacities.
This information was revealed in Abuja by Joseph Osanipin, the Director- General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC). Osanipin noted that the electric buses will be obtained from local assemblers to enhance domestic production capabilities and stimulate growth in Nigeria’s automotive sector.
He emphasized, "This initiative is geared towards promoting the transition to cleaner mobility while creating opportunities for local manufacturers." Moreover, he highlighted that the government has also secured charging stations which will be distributed across various regions to facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles.
In an effort to advance the automotive sector, the council is in the process of establishing the Nnewi Automotive Development Park located in Anambra State. Osanipin elaborated, "We are creating the Nnewi Automotive Development Park where essential infrastructure will be provided, allowing users of the park to utilize shared facilities."
He further explained that the shared infrastructure approach would permit investors and manufacturers to function without incurring the total expenses associated with setting up independent facilities. The council is actively pursuing further investments to expedite the park’s development and draw in more industry players.
Osanipin urged citizens to buy locally assembled vehicles, stressing that increased patronage would bolster job creation and drive economic progress. He added that the council is offering training to manufacturers and stakeholders to improve the local production of automotive components such as batteries and tyres.
"This strategy will lessen our reliance on imports, generate job opportunities, and positively impact the nation’s Gross Domestic Product," he stated. Additionally, the NADDC collaborates with the Bank of Industry Nigeria to facilitate the allocation of the National Automotive Development Fund to qualified stakeholders.
