Clement Jimbo, the federal representative for the Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency, has stated his opposition to Speaker Udeme Otong’s quest for a third term in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as the 2027 elections approach.

Jimbo articulated his stance during a meeting at his home in Uyo on Thursday, when he welcomed Tony Udonsa, who is seeking to contest for the Abak State Constituency in the upcoming elections.

Mr. Udonsa serves as a senior legislative aide to Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate.

Echoing sentiments shared by various attendees at the meeting, including Atuekong Paul, Jimbo raised concerns about the rationale behind extending Otong’s tenure. He remarked that a third term would lead to the speaker holding office for 12 continuous years.

Jimbo confirmed the accuracy of these reports to PREMIUM TIMES, pointing out that a prolonged term for Otong could diminish political representation for other communities, especially the Midim clan in Abak, which has not had a representative in the state legislature since the return to democracy in 1999.

He asserted, "Granting one individual a 12-year tenure would deprive a generation of their right to political representation,” insisting that fairness should dictate political decisions in their constituency.

Firm in his opposition, Jimbo expressed willingness to bear personal political sacrifices to prevent Otong's re-election, stating, "Even if it costs me my own candidacy, I will uphold this decision and not allow it to proceed."

He urged Mr. Udonsa to enhance engagement with grassroots supporters, particularly the youth, as he explores his candidacy for the Abak State Constituency.

Jimbo also revealed plans to replace his campaign billboard with one featuring Udonsa's image.

Earlier in the day, Udonsa indicated that his visit was part of his strategy to consult ahead of the 2027 elections. As a member of the Midim clan, he highlighted the community's long-standing wait to have representation in the state assembly and their determination to rectify that in the upcoming elections. He pointed to various projects he has facilitated across communities in Abak as part of his current role.

Meanwhile, Speaker Udeme Otong had previously commented that he had effectively secured candidacy for all assembly tickets for the forthcoming elections, asserting that the 2027 elections were already decided.

In response to inquiries regarding this matter, Otong did not provide comments, nor did his spokesperson, Emmanuel Ebong, choose to discuss the topics, terming them “political matters.” Ebong noted, "The constituents of Abak who granted him the mandate will ultimately determine if he should pursue a third term."
