Felix Morka, serving as the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has categorically denied any ongoing discussions about the vice-presidential ticket for the 2027 elections, asserting that the media's current speculations are unfounded.
Morka noted, "The question of who is going to make the 2027 ticket was not coming from us. It was not something that we put out there… our party is not engaging the question as to tickets and who will be on the ticket."
During an interview on ARISE News on Tuesday, he stressed that the recent rumors concerning potential successors for the Vice President were not initiated by the party. He stated, "We are a political party and to ensure that Nigerians do not misinterpret these rumors and speculations as originating from our party, we have to clarify this."
In discussing the responsibilities of the media in political reporting, Morka advised journalists to act responsibly and refrain from amplifying unverified rumors. He remarked, "We all have mutual interests in ensuring that we do not unnecessarily inflame our politics at this stage. Hence, it is crucial that the information being disseminated is credible, and the media bears this responsibility."
Morka further addressed the matter of endorsements and public support for the president, clarifying that such expressions should not be confused with formal party processes. He explained, "One is merely expressions of opinion, commendation, or endorsements, while the statutory system of primaries is something that cannot be overlooked, as it is overseen by INEC, the Electoral Management Authority. They are fundamentally different processes and should not be conflated."
He also shed light on the ongoing speculation regarding the vice-presidential position, asserting, "If you are basing your judgment on previous practices associated with the president to conclude that he now intends to replace the vice-president, that is speculative rather than factual, and that is my key point."
Regarding internal party primaries and candidate selection, Morka emphasized that constituents have the authority to determine their party representatives at the local level. He stated, "These primaries are mechanisms employed by constituents to choose who will carry the party's flag in their areas. It is not up to the party to decide this. Our role is to supervise the process rather than dictate or allocate seats to candidates in any constituency."
Morka also dismissed fears that the rising number of governors aligning with the APC indicates a shift toward a one-party state. He remarked, "We cannot be gatekeepers determining who enters or exits the party. Should we do so, you would challenge me on why we turn people away. Our approach respects democratic values."
