The Federal Government has declared its intention to implement substantial reforms within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) as a measure to enhance the country's criminal justice system.

Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, made this declaration at the conclusion of a two-day assembly of stakeholders. The engagement focused on the findings of an Independent Investigative Panel that examined allegations of corruption, abuse of authority, and related issues within the correctional service.

Dr. Ajani, who also presided over the Special Investigative Panel, indicated that the process has advanced from mere review to the active implementation of crucial recommendations. These proposed changes are designed to elevate accountability, strengthen institutional integrity, and ensure greater respect for human dignity within correctional facilities.

She further elaborated that the investigative panel's report will undergo revisions to incorporate feedback from the stakeholders. Following these updates, the report will be formally presented to the Minister of Interior, Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In line with the government's dedication to transparency and inclusive reform processes, Dr. Ajani stated that the finalized report would be made accessible to the public.

"The report itself is not the ultimate goal, but rather a catalyst for action," she remarked. "What is paramount is the earnestness with which we commit to implementing its recommendations to fortify the system and reinstate public trust."

Additionally, she urged state governments to assume a more proactive role in offering support to the correctional centres operating within their respective states.
