The international governing body of football, FIFA, has decided to penalize both Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo for multiple infractions of its regulations during the continental playoff for the 2026 World Cup.

In the playoff match, Nigeria's Super Eagles faced defeat via a penalty shootout, losing 4-3 after a 1-1 tie that extended into extra time. The match was marred by inappropriate fan behavior from both sides, which violated FIFA’s rules.

As detailed in a disciplinary report released by FIFA, Nigeria was sanctioned for breaches related to order and security, including throwing objects during the match, which is a violation under Article 17.2.b of FIFA's disciplinary code.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo was cited for its fans using laser pointers and similar devices to distract Nigerian players, contravening Article 17.2.c and Article 17 of FIFA's regulations.

Nigeria has been fined 1,000 Swiss Francs, while Congo DR faces a heftier fine of 5,000 Swiss Francs. FIFA noted that certain disciplinary decisions could be contested through an appeal, but did not clarify whether the penalties imposed on Nigeria and Congo DR were eligible for such actions.

Additionally, FIFA has not yet responded to Nigeria's complaint regarding Congo DR's alleged fielding of ineligible players during the playoff encounter.

The victory over Nigeria secured Congo DR's place in the intercontinental playoff, and they have officially named their squad for the tournament in Mexico later this month, which will determine the last two teams to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
