Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of Nigeria's President, has expressed her strong disapproval of the reported violence against women and girls that occurred at the Alue-Do cultural festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
In a statement released on Sunday, Mrs. Tinubu commended the Nigerian police for their swift arrests in connection with the incident, while urging the proper authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
She also appealed to the victims to seek necessary medical and psychological assistance following the traumatic events.
In her five-paragraph statement, the First Lady remarked, "I was horrified to see the disturbing videos that surfaced from Ozoro in the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, revealing the physical and sexual abuse of young girls at what should have been a joyous festival."
"While I deeply value our rich cultural diversity, I firmly believe that no tradition permits any individual to violate a woman's or girl's dignity or freedom," she added.
Mrs. Tinubu praised the actions of the Nigeria Police Force for the arrests made thus far and stressed the importance of ensuring that all offenders face severe repercussions under the law.
She continued, "To the victims of this tragic occurrence, I encourage you to seek the appropriate medical and psychological support. I wish for your healing, peace, and strength during these challenging times."
In a different note, Mrs. Tinubu celebrated the contributions of women as the world marked World Water Day, highlighting the theme for 2026: "Water and Gender," which emphasizes the connection between water access, sanitation, and gender equity.
She pointed out, "In many communities, it is women and girls who are primarily responsible for fetching water, often enduring long walks to remote streams, which detracts from their education, health, and economic prospects."
"By providing safe, clean, and readily available water, we do more than satisfy thirst; we empower girls to remain in school, women to pursue economic opportunities, and families to enhance their health," she stated.
"Let us collaborate to ensure that where water flows in Nigeria, true equity also flourishes."
She concluded with, "Happy World Water Day!"
