Four Killed, 18 Injured in Abuja-Lokoja Road Bus Fire

A commuter bus travelling from Lokoja towards Abuja caught fire near Yangoji village, resulting in the deaths of four passengers and injuries to 18 others. The vehicle, an 18-seater commuter bus, veered off the road and burst into flames.

Tragedy struck on the Abuja-Lokoja highway near Yangoji village when an 18-seater commuter bus was engulfed in flames, leading to the death of four passengers and injuries to 18 others. The incident occurred on Saturday morning around 7:59 am.

The bus, identified by its registration number AKK 288 ZA, was reportedly travelling from the Lokoja axis at a high speed when it veered off the road, plunging into a ditch before igniting.

Witnesses reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle, contributing to the accident that resulted in the fiery crash.

According to an account from a witness, four individuals on board were burnt to death, their remains beyond recognition. The other passengers sustained various injuries.

Rescue efforts by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) managed to retrieve the charred remains and transport them to a hospital morgue. The 18 survivors, some suffering from severe burns, fractures, and bruises, were promptly taken to medical facilities, including Rhema Hospital in Kwali, for urgent treatment.

An FRSC official involved in the operation confirmed the fatalities and stated that all 22 individuals on the bus were male. The rescue operation was a collaborative effort involving the FRSC and police officers from the Kwali Division.

Authorities have attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed and loss of vehicle control by the driver.
