The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the detention of four suspected bandits near Akure Airport in Ondo State after a well- coordinated security operation involving local and aviation security agencies.
On Sunday, March 15, 2026, Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, relayed that the suspects were apprehended following a distress call reporting the sighting of suspicious individuals near the airport perimeter close to the Eleyewo community.
"A collaborative operation was promptly initiated by security personnel, which included officials from FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigeria Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and various local security agencies," Agbebire stated.
He noted that although some suspects attempted to escape, four individuals were successfully caught and subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for additional investigation.
FAAN praised the quick collaboration among aviation security forces, military personnel, police, and local security groups, including Amotekun and community vigilance groups, for their roles in the arrests while highlighting the need to bolster airport perimeter security measures.
Furthermore, the agency pointed out that the Federal Government, along with the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, supported by the Presidency, is expediting the installation of modern perimeter fencing and enhancing security systems across airports in the country.
"The implementation is being carried out in phases to ensure that airports under FAAN are better protected from illegal entries and other security risks," Agbebire added.
FAAN reaffirmed its dedication to the safety and security of all airport facilities nationwide, assuring the traveling public and neighboring communities of its ongoing commitment to maintaining high security standards.
