The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a warning to motorists to avoid alcohol consumption and speeding as the nation celebrates Valentine’s Day. To promote safe driving, the Corps has deployed officers and breathalyzers across the country.

With the rise of digital love notes, trending hashtags, and the convenience of online gift shopping, Valentine’s Day is increasingly becoming a digital celebration characterized by romance, connectivity, and commerce.

However, as many venture onto the roads for festivities, the FRSC has cautioned against reckless behaviors that could transform a joyous occasion into one marked by tragedy. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed emphasized that all necessary operational and educational resources have been mobilized to ensure the safety of road users during this period.

Research from SBM Intelligence indicates a notable increase in spending associated with Valentine’s Day, despite ongoing economic challenges. Business owners are seizing the festive season to launch innovative campaigns, offering a range of gifts including perfumes, fashion items, smartphones, flowers, and curated gift sets, all available with a simple click.

Analysts have observed a steady growth in spending during Valentine’s celebrations, with a significant proportion of transactions occurring online, buoyed by advancements in digital finance and fintech. They attribute this trend to the increasing popularity of Valentine’s Day within a tech-savvy marketplace, making the occasion more competitive, accessible, and unique.

Tayo Williams, CEO of PricePointe Wholesale Club, remarked that the prominence gained by online marketplaces and social media is not only transforming how Valentine’s Day is perceived but is also reshaping its significance.

"The online market and social media have elevated Valentine’s Day into a more fashionable and prominent occasion, evolving from a private exchange of cards or quiet moments to a highly publicized event," Williams stated.

Echoing these sentiments, Oghoghozino Otefia, the founder of Aggital Works, noted that Valentine’s Day has transitioned from a solitary day for romantic expressions to a full-fledged digital sales season, with social media acting as a catalyst.

Over the years, various platforms have changed how trends are amplified and consumer expectations are formed, extending the celebrations well beyond February 14.

Interestingly, consumers seem to welcome the spotlight and the trends that arise from new media. Increasingly, Nigerians now turn to social media and e-commerce websites for gift ideas and to plan how to celebrate their loved ones.

Peace Iliyilade, a Social Media Manager at Jiji Nigeria, pointed out that the emergence of digital platforms has led to increased exposure for Valentine’s Day, significantly impacting yearly spending patterns and gift selections.

"With the rise of e-commerce and social media, Valentine’s Day has become more visible and trend-driven. These platforms influence spending choices, introduce people to new gift ideas, and help enhance bonds and expressions of love," Iliyilade explained.

She further noted that social media serves as a guide for whom to celebrate, where, and how to partake in the festivities.

"Many individuals find gift inspiration through platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X. Online marketplaces such as Jiji, Amazon, and Jumia have also become preferred options for Valentine’s shopping. The influence of content creators shapes perceptions of what constitutes an ideal Valentine’s gift or experience," she added.

Meanwhile, the FRSC has issued a strong caution to all celebrants and road users to refrain from drunk driving, maintain appropriate speeds, and avoid reckless driving to reduce the incidence of road accidents today.

Corps Marshal Mohammed reiterated that all operational measures and educational strategies are in place to protect road users during the celebrations.

He instructed Commanding Officers to enhance visibility through the deployment of officers to ensure effective traffic control and strict enforcement of traffic laws.

In a statement from the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps announced that officers will be equipped with breathalyzers and radar guns to identify and apprehend suspected drunk drivers, preventing potential accidents and preserving lives and property.

"Valentine's Day is universally recognized as a time to honor love, exchange gifts, and show care for one another, inspired by Saint Valentine’s legacy of love during his lifetime," Mohammed asserted.

"Thus, motorists participating in the celebrations are urged to adhere to all road traffic laws, as the Corps is committed to enforcing regulations against violators."

He encouraged motorists to utilize the FRSC's toll-free emergency line at 122 for swift assistance in cases of accidents, road obstructions, or to report reckless driving.

As he reminded everyone to comply with safety protocols during the festivities, the Corps Marshal called upon all road users to assist FRSC officers in their duties aimed at safeguarding lives and properties, emphasizing that their presence is for everyone's benefit.

He also appealed to parents and guardians to advise their wards to behave responsibly during this period, citing records that indicate youths are particularly at risk during Valentine’s celebrations.
