Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has characterized the impeachment notice against him and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, issued by the state House of Assembly, as a mere 'love letter'.

Speaking at the finals of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament, where he served as a Special Guest on Saturday, Fubara vowed to refrain from endorsing any actions that may jeopardize peace and safety within the state.

In his remarks addressing the impeachment matter for the first time, the governor emphasized that ensuring the safety of lives and properties is the top priority of his administration.

Daily Trust recalls that the Rivers State House of Assembly had earlier written to the State Chief Judge last Thursday, requesting the formation of a seven-member panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against both Governor Fubara and his deputy.

Fubara reiterated that he remains the Governor of Rivers State and is dedicated to fulfilling the promises made to the people.

He expressed his satisfaction that the entire week of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament unfolded without any incidents, calling the peaceful environment a testament to the safety of Rivers State for residents, visitors, and investors.

The governor conveyed his disappointment regarding the persistent political turmoil experienced in the state, noting that such crises often coincide with the annual polo tournament over the last three years.

“It is truly unfortunate that every time we hold this tournament, there is always an issue. In 2024, there were promises made to me, yet January was tumultuous. In 2025, you did not choose to consult with me. Now in 2026, I find myself receiving a love letter,” he remarked.

He concluded by asserting, “What matters is that I am still the Governor of Rivers State, and we will stay committed to delivering on what we promised to the people of Rivers.”

Fubara conveyed his happiness that the polo tournament took place smoothly, confirming that the Port Harcourt Polo Club reported no issues during the event. He stated, "This reflects that we are making progress and confirms the safety of Rivers State. Ensuring this is fundamental to governance.”

Despite the ongoing political challenges, he ensured that his administration will persist in fulfilling its obligations and will extend support to individuals and organizations genuinely focused on the progress of Rivers State.

He also made a commitment that the state government would aim to enhance the recognition of the Port Harcourt Polo Club, acknowledged for having one of the finest natural grass polo fields in the country.

Furthermore, he invited the attendees and polo players, including those from abroad, to relish the tranquility of Port Harcourt and to counter negative perceptions of the state by promoting accurate and positive information.

Notable guests at the tournament's final match included the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria and various polo players from across the nation, alongside teams from India and Argentina participating in the week-long event.
