Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his commitment to the safety and security of all residents within the state.
The Governor made this pledge on Friday at the Government House in Port Harcourt, during an audience with a Muslim delegation led by Alhaji Nasir Uhor, Vice President General of the Rivers State Council for Islamic Affairs.
The delegation included Islamic clerics and representatives of the Arewa Community in Rivers, who sought the Governor's audience in honor of the Eid- el-Fitr festivities.
According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, every individual residing in Rivers, regardless of their origin or faith, is regarded as a local indigene due to their presence and contributions.
Fubara remarked, "Anyone engaged in business here is automatically a part of our community. Even if you were not born here, you are a Rivers indigene by virtue of your residence and family ties. As a government, we promise to protect your lives and properties."
He emphasized, "Our priority is to make Rivers State a safe place for all."
The Governor praised the Muslim community's dedication and perseverance during Ramadan, calling it a significant period of spiritual reflection within Islam.
Addressing security matters, particularly the ongoing tensions between farmers and herders in various regions, Fubara emphasized that Rivers State has been relatively stable thanks to proactive measures and collaboration with security forces.
However, he encouraged the Muslim leaders to enhance their internal communication to promote peaceful interactions among their members.
"You must establish your own internal mechanisms to communicate with your members, ensuring they behave well in their communities and businesses," he advised. "As their leaders and peers, you have the responsibility to guide them towards maintaining peace for the benefit of our state."
Reflecting on the long-standing partnership between the government and the Muslim community, the Governor acknowledged their continuous support and prayers during his transition into office and beyond.
Fubara assured the delegation that their previous requests would be reviewed and addressed in line with the capabilities of the state.
In response, Alhaji Uhor expressed gratitude to the Governor for his willingness to engage with the Muslim community and for promoting an ethos of religious inclusiveness.
Uhor presented several key requests, including the establishment of a modern central mosque in Port Harcourt, the restoration of the Muslim section of the Port Harcourt Cemetery to the Council to facilitate burial processes, and the allocation of land for mosque construction at the Rivers State University.
