In many of Nigeria's 36 states, forthcoming political contests appear to follow a predictable pattern; however, Rivers State differentiates itself from the norm. While most states exhibit a relatively open battle for political succession, with candidates competing based on their qualifications and influence, Rivers showcases a strong hierarchical approach with a dominant figure attempting to single-handedly dictate the political landscape. This scenario stems from a prolonged power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, rooted in the historical context of godfatherism.
