Governor Umo Eno Challenges Contractor on Mortuary Focus at Hospital Site

During a recent tour of the Ikot Ekpene Udo General Hospital site, Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno raised concerns regarding the focus of the project after it was revealed that mortuary facilities were given priority over essential hospital services.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has garnered significant attention online following the emergence of a video depicting the governor confronting a contractor over the choice of plans. Eno expressed astonishment that the project aimed to commence with mortuary facilities rather than the hospital itself.

In the video, the governor emphatically stated, "Why did you start mortuary first? Why mortuary? I instructed you to build a hospital; don’t say that kind of thing again, don’t show me mortuary." His remarks, though made in a light- hearted yet serious manner, quickly caught fire on various social media platforms, igniting a debate about the appropriateness of focusing on life- affirming infrastructure over facilities related to death in public healthcare projects.

The inspection tour not only included the hospital site but also encompassed other major infrastructure projects within the state, such as the Ikot Ekpene Udo Bridge and the Oron Marine Jetty, which are under government funding.

Emphasizing the intent behind these developments, Eno reiterated that the infrastructure projects were designed to benefit the people of Akwa Ibom State. The video and the subsequent social media engagement have continued to stir conversations about the priorities in project execution, healthcare service delivery, and the governor’s active role in overseeing public works.
