Imo State's Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has extended a generous donation of N600 million to assist the families of those who have lost their lives in service and victims affected by the challenges of insecurity within the region.
Uzodimma announced this contribution on Thursday at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri, coinciding with the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
He honored the sacrifices made by the fallen servicemen, acknowledging the unfortunate loss of some security personnel due to insecurity while expressing optimism that the situation is gradually improving.
In a separate statement, Uzodimma attributed his accomplishments over the past six years to divine intervention, referring to them as a result of divine guidance during a thanksgiving service celebrating his sixth year in office at the Government House Chapel in Owerri.
The governor also expressed gratitude towards religious leaders, community heads, stakeholders, and law-abiding citizens of Imo for their continuous prayers and backing, which have fostered an atmosphere of peace and stability throughout the state.
He highlighted the significant importance of taking his oath of office on the same day as the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, paying tribute to the sacrifices of security personnel.
Uzodimma reassured the public that the most challenging times have passed and emphasized the ongoing progress within the state. He called for unwavering support from the populace, reiterating his dedication to delivering effective governance and encouraging fervent prayers.
During the officiating mass, Bishop Dr. Lucius Ugorji, the Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Metropolitan, acknowledged the significant achievements during Uzodimma's tenure, including advancements in road infrastructure, social programs, and initiatives focused on youth empowerment and digital entrepreneurship.
He also recognized improvements in security, noting the peaceful celebration of Christmas and New Year festivities, while urging that experiences like the recent discovery of an illegal morgue in Ngor Okpala should not be repeated. The bishop also paid respects to fallen heroes and security personnel across the country.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Uzodimma’s Deputy, Dr. Chinyere Ekomaru, members of the Expanded Executive Council, former Governor Chief Ikedi Ohakim, security heads, federal and state lawmakers, traditional rulers, clergy, and other key stakeholders in the community.
