Gunmen have reportedly abducted five people, among them two pregnant women, during an incursion into Maiwa Village located in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

As per a local informant who chose to remain anonymous, the attack transpired at approximately 5 PM on Saturday, when the heavily armed assailants invaded the village on seven motorcycles.

Witnesses recounted that while congregating at a mosque, they heard gunfire which prompted them to flee. One witness remarked, "I swiftly ran towards the nearby police officers as they began shooting into the air."

He further stated that the police personnel abandoned their posts upon spotting two bandits chasing him on motorcycles.

“After I managed to escape, they returned and went from house to house to abduct the individuals,” he added.

The kidnapped individuals have been identified as Sadiya Umar, Firdausi Umar, Maryam Musa, Ubaida Musa, and Harira Nura. Notably, two of them, Sadiya and Ubaida, are very pregnant and close to their delivery dates.

Additionally, the informant shared that the attackers had stolen 12 cows during the raid but later returned them.

In light of the violence, several residents sought refuge in the neighboring Niger Republic, although many returned the following Sunday morning.

Attempts to reach the state's police spokesperson, DSP Ahmad Rufai, for comments were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to requests made via calls and text messages during the compilation of this report.
