Typically, Haiti isn't the first country that comes to mind when discussing the Winter Olympics. However, at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games, the Caribbean country turned heads with its stunning uniforms that radiate vibrancy and creativity.
Although Haiti's delegation includes only two athletes, skiers Richi Viano and Stevenson Savart, their representation is resonating far beyond the ski slopes.
In a bold departure from the common navy blues and blacks often seen in Olympic uniforms, Haiti's athletes sport an exhilarating array of colors—lush greens, striking blues, and fiery reds that honor their heritage against the picturesque backdrop of Italy's snow-covered mountains.
These awe-inspiring outfits are the brainchild of Stella Novarino, the creative force behind the Stella Jean brand. Collaborating with former ski champion Pietro Vitalini, she drew inspiration from the renowned Haitian artist Edouard Duval-Carrié. Each uniform is exclusively hand-painted, making them a singular spectacle at this year’s Olympics.
There’s a notable backstory behind the design as well. The initial sketches included a portrait of the revolutionary figure Toussaint Louverture. However, following a caution from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the portrait’s political implications, Jean and her team adapted their approach. They painted over the figure, leaving a striking image of a red horse leaping through a lush tropical setting.
The final product is nothing short of breathtaking. The female athlete's uniform blends high fashion with functionality, featuring a structured green athletic jacket paired with an extravagant tiered skirt. The middle section, painted with a vivid tropical scene, is complemented by a traditional Haitian tignon (headwrap) and gold hoop earrings. Meanwhile, the male athlete wears a classic ski jacket and trousers adorned with the same lively botanical designs, merging utility with elegance.
Gandy Thomas, Haiti's ambassador to Italy, remarked on the significance of their presence at the Games: "We might not be a winter nation, but we refuse to be constrained by expectations. Being absent is the most perilous form of erasure, and we choose to be present."
Stella Jean encapsulated the sentiment perfectly, stating, "Haiti is making its mark at the Winter Olympics with an offering that no crisis can diminish: art and creativity. We step onto this global stage as equals to all nations, unaffected by economic measures."
