The Kano State Hisbah Board has reported the arrest of nine Muslims for the alleged act of eating in public, coinciding with the inaugural day of Ramadan on Wednesday.
Mujahid Aminudeen, the Deputy Commander of Hisbah, confirmed that the group comprised seven men and two women.
He elaborated that these individuals were caught eating openly during the day, which is against the fasting customs observed during Ramadan.
"They were apprehended and are currently in our custody where we will educate them on the significance of fasting, how to pray, and read the Qur'an, guiding them on how to be better Muslims," Aminudeen stated.
However, details concerning when the detained individuals might be released were not provided.
Kano, which is largely a Muslim state, applies Islamic legal guidelines alongside Nigeria's civil laws. Every Ramadan, Hisbah personnel vigilantly monitor restaurants and marketplaces to enforce adherence to fasting protocols.
While dining establishments remain operational in regions with sizable Christian populations, Muslims are expected to refrain from eating between dawn and dusk during this sacred month.
