The International Communication Association (ICA) Nigeria Chapter concluded its inaugural national conference, which centered on the latest global communication trends, research insights, and the importance of strategic collaboration for the advancement of Africa.
Held at Nile University of Nigeria, the event brought together experts in communication, academic professionals, leaders from various institutions, and representatives from ICA across India, Indonesia, and Kenya.
During the conference, attendees explored the shifting dynamics of global communication and its significant impact on Nigeria and the entire African continent. The discussions highlighted the pressing need to enhance the media and communication sector in the region.
The event, themed "Global Shifts in Communication and Implications for Africa," urged emerging African scholars to actively participate, innovate, and work alongside international institutions to maximize their influence.
Timothy Onyejelem, a Senior Lecturer from Federal University Otuoke, pointed out the increasing significance of digital entrepreneurs in Nigeria's creative sector. He remarked that local content producers are making strides by creating material that competes on a global scale, establishing Nigeria as a crucial player in the worldwide creator economy.
Onyejelem also noted that with a user base of over 100 million internet subscribers, Nigeria stands as one of the most vibrant digital markets in Africa. However, he stressed that creators need to progress from mere content consumption to mastering digital technologies to thrive.
Additionally, the conference included discussions regarding the upcoming first ICA Conference in Africa, set for June 4–6, 2026, as well as the 3rd anniversary of ICA Nigeria.
Participants from 51 different institutions and organizations across Nigeria delivered presentations addressing the various conference sub-themes.
The event also signified a leadership change within ICA Nigeria, with Ekaete George transferring leadership to Desmond Okocha as the new chairperson.
This conference emphasized the essentiality of intellectual dialogue and cooperation in positioning Nigeria and the African continent as pivotal players within the global communication arena.
