Ifeanyi Udeze, a past player for the Super Eagles, has announced his intention to support the Democratic Republic of the Congo in their pursuit of a place at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. This comes after DR Congo's victory against Nigeria.
The Congolese team is on the verge of qualifying for their first World Cup since making their debut in 1974, needing only a single victory to secure their spot.
To achieve this, the Leopards must triumph over Jamaica in the play-off final set to take place in Mexico on Tuesday.
DR Congo advanced to this crucial match by overcoming Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 4-3 following a 1-1 draw during regular and extra time in the African play-offs held in Morocco in November 2025.
Now, they stand at the threshold of making only their second World Cup appearance.
Udeze shared his reasoning for supporting DR Congo during an interview on Brila FM, stating, “I am rooting for DR Congo to qualify for the World Cup because I want the Super Eagles players to grasp the significance of qualifying for a major tournament like the World Cup—especially when the team that eliminated you subsequently goes on to qualify.
Therefore, I am backing DR Congo and wishing them every success.”
Should DR Congo succeed in their upcoming match, Africa would be represented by a total of 10 teams at the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Among the other African nations already confirmed to participate are Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Cape Verde, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.
