The Police Command in Imo State has launched an intensive search for the perpetrators who murdered Eze Paulinus Ekwueme, the traditional ruler of Ochia Autonomous Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area.
DSP Henry Okoye, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed this development in a statement provided to journalists on Saturday.
Reports indicate that Ekwueme was attacked and killed by armed assailants on Friday in the Assa community, along Asa Awara Road, within the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area.
Okoye stated that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Audu Bosso, has directed the deployment of the command’s specialized tactical units, in collaboration with other security agencies, to apprehend those responsible for the violent incident.
“The deployment was ordered following a distress call received by the Ohaji Police Division on April 10, around 1630hrs, alerting us to an attack by armed assailants on Ekwueme along Asa Awara Road,” the PPRO explained.
He added, “Tragically, this attack resulted in the loss of the monarch, Ekwueme, the Ochia I of Ochia Kingdom, and five other individuals whose identities are yet to be confirmed.”
Okoye further noted that the deployed tactical teams discovered the burnt bodies of the deceased.
The remains have since been transported to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) in Owerri for preservation and to facilitate an autopsy.
“In response, the command has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. Intensive operations are currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover any arms in their possession,” Okoye stated.
He assured that robust security measures have been put in place to prevent the recurrence of such a tragic event in the community and surrounding areas.
The PPRO also disclosed that Commissioner Bosso, accompanied by his management team, visited Ochia community for an on-the-spot assessment and to engage with residents, reassuring them of enhanced and continuous security presence.
“The Commissioner extended his condolences to the families of the late traditional ruler and the other victims. He reaffirmed the command's unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state,” Okoye conveyed.
“We are confident that the individuals responsible will be apprehended and brought to justice swiftly,” he added.
Okoye urged the public to provide any credible information that could assist the police in their ongoing investigation.
Citizens are encouraged to report to the nearest Police Station or contact the command via the following numbers: 08034773600 and 08148024755. (NAN)
