The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that ten political entities will take part in the upcoming by-elections for the Kano State House of Assembly, slated to occur on February 21.

During a stakeholders’ meeting held in Kano, Ambassador Abdu Zango, the Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), detailed that nominations from ten registered political parties have been received as preparations for the elections proceed in the Kano Municipal and Ungogo local government areas.

The parties confirmed to be participating include the All Progressives Congress (APC), Action Democratic Party (ADP), African Action Congress (AAC), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Dennis Labour Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Good Party, Action Alliance (AA), Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

He went on to mention that while the nominations are now submitted at the state level, the details of the candidates are currently being uploaded by the national offices of the respective political parties using INEC’s online system.

As of the designated deadline, nominations from the ten parties have been confirmed, with the uploading of candidate information still ongoing. The final tally of candidates will be validated once the process reaches completion at the INEC headquarters.

Zango also conveyed that monitors from the national headquarters have been assigned to oversee the party primaries in the identified constituencies, highlighting that no negative reports have been documented thus far.

“Our monitors, accompanied by state officials familiar with the local conditions, have overseen the primaries conducted by the parties. As it stands, there have been no reports of irregularities shared with us,” the REC stated.

Regarding concerns about internal conflicts within certain parties, especially the NNPP, Zango clarified that INEC has not been informed of any court orders or official communications that might jeopardize the recognition of party executives or the primary process.

“We are not cognizant of any court injunctions. INEC’s operations are strictly conducted in accordance with legal guidelines and reports from appropriately monitored primaries,” he emphasized.

The REC also reassured voters that INEC is making extensive preparations for the by-elections, underscoring the commission’s commitment to facilitating a fair, transparent, and credible electoral process.

He indicated that the by-elections will take place across two state constituencies encompassing Kano Municipal and Ungogo LGAs, with over 535,000 registered voters and upwards of 1,000 polling units available.

INEC has called upon eligible voters in the relevant areas to actively participate and cast their votes, assuring them that the necessary personnel and resources are in place to guarantee an efficient electoral experience.
