A substantial fire incident occurred at the velodrome within Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Park on Wednesday morning, April 8. The emergency prompted a large- scale response, with around 80 firefighters and 20 fire vehicles deployed to the scene, according to official reports.
The Rio state military fire department indicated that the fire's impact was primarily concentrated on the velodrome's fabric roof.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the incident. The internal sections of the building, including the Olympic Museum, were reported to be unaffected.
Rio's mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, informed reporters that only a small segment of the city’s Olympic museum, which comprises about 1,000 artifacts and is located inside the velodrome, sustained minor damage that would necessitate only slight repairs.
"The velodrome's fundamental structure remains intact, and the track itself was not impacted in any way," Cavaliere stated.
While an investigation into the precise cause of this recent incident is underway, it is noted that the facility has experienced roof fires in the past.
