Ali Larijani, the head of Iran’s National Security Council, has asserted that a number of American soldiers have been captured since the outbreak of hostilities a week ago. He noted that this development is a direct outcome of the sustained conflict between Tehran and the US-Israeli coalition, accusing US forces of underestimating Iran's military readiness.
Larijani stated, "Evidence suggests that several American soldiers have been detained since the hostilities commenced," asserting that Tehran has confirmed these captures while accusing Washington of trying to obscure the facts. He characterized the alleged information suppression as part of a wider US tactic to misrepresent the realities of the ongoing war.
He further claimed, "The American administration is selectively reporting casualties, but we have verified that a number of their personnel have been captured and are now in Iranian custody. This situation cannot remain concealed for long."
Although Larijani's announcement has not been independently authenticated, it follows a week of heightened military activity in the region, featuring missile and drone assaults targeting US installations across the Gulf. Iran has consistently maintained that its military efforts focus on US facilities, whereas US and allied forces argue they are executing precision strikes aimed at Iranian military assets.
In response to Larijani’s allegations, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) promptly issued a denial. CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins declared, "These claims are false and misleading. No American service members have been taken prisoner by Iranian forces. We rigorously monitor all operations and remain fully informed about the situation."
The current escalation comes amid significant international unease regarding the rapid increase in conflict intensity. US-Israeli operations, which began on February 28, have included multiple attacks targeting Iranian military infrastructure and leadership. Reports indicate that both sides have sustained casualties, with Iranian authorities reporting over 1,300 civilian deaths, while US reports acknowledge military fatalities in the single digits.
The alleged soldier captures coincide with a surge in information warfare, as Tehran continues to accuse Washington of misleading campaigns, while US officials caution against Iranian propaganda intended to sway global opinion. Analysts suggest that remarks such as Larijani’s may be aimed at boosting domestic morale and signaling strategic leverage, regardless of the actual status of foreign combatants.
In addition to military operations, the implications for the region are significant. The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil deliveries, continues to be a hotspot for military tension. Reports indicate that Iran’s missile capabilities have been demonstrated in several strikes, raising concerns about potential disruptions to Gulf shipping routes and impacting global oil prices.
Reactions from international observers have highlighted the urgent need for independent verification of any potential prisoner captures. Currently, there is no confirmation from neutral agencies or media outlets regarding the status of US personnel purportedly held in Iran. The circumstances remain dynamic, with both Tehran and Washington exchanging statements while closely observing military developments.
Larijani concluded his remarks by cautioning that US forces deployed in the region should proceed with care, asserting that Tehran reserves the right to escalate military actions if warranted. "This conflict has reached a point where any miscalculation by the United States could lead to serious repercussions," he warned, underscoring the potential for further escalation.
