The Israeli military has reported that the sibling of the attacker involved in the Michigan synagogue incident was a commander with Hezbollah, tasked with managing arms in a unit responsible for launching numerous rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) indicated in a post on the platform X that Ibrahim Mohamad Ghazali, brother of Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, was in a leadership position within a particular section of Hezbollah's Badr unit.
It was further noted by the IDF that Ibrahim Ghazali was killed during an Israeli air force operation that targeted a Hezbollah military facility last week. Ayman Ghazali had tragically taken his own life after a confrontation with security personnel at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, following an attack he conducted on Thursday.
Additionally, a Hezbollah representative reportedly informed the New York Times that Ayman Ghazali’s assault on Temple Israel, recognized as one of the largest synagogues in the United States, was an act of retaliation for the deaths of several family members during an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon on March 5. However, the representative did not confirm or deny the claims made by the IDF regarding Ibrahim Ghazali’s involvement with Hezbollah.
According to Imam Hassan Qazwini from the Islamic Institute of America, Ayman Ghazali had participated in a memorial service for his deceased relatives—including two children and another brother, apart from Ibrahim—at a mosque in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, on March 8.
Ayman Ghazali, a naturalized citizen of the US who originated from Lebanon, drove a Ford F-150 truck into Temple Israel located on Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield last Thursday. The synagogue had previously increased its security protocols in response to earlier attacks on places of worship and incidents of antisemitism.
An armed guard engaged in a shootout with Ghazali after he fired rounds through the truck's windshield. The vehicle’s engine subsequently caught fire, igniting gasoline and fireworks that were stored in the truck’s bed, according to officials. During the exchange, the guard sustained injuries, while Ghazali ultimately shot himself. Fortunately, the FBI’s Detroit field office confirmed that none of the 103 children or approximately 50 staff, teachers, and clergy present were injured.
The IDF disclosed that the airstrike on March 5 targeted a Hezbollah 'military structure' in Mashgharah, where arms were kept and operatives were located. Reports from Lebanese officials stated that the airstrike struck a three-story building, causing serious injuries to Ibrahim Ghazali’s wife.
Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated following the initiation of US and Israeli military operations in Iran on February 28, triggered by a missile strike that resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel on March 2, which led to Israeli airstrikes that according to Lebanon’s health ministry estimates, have claimed around 800 lives.
The attack in Michigan has raised alarms about possible retaliatory actions within the United States related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. US Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan attributed the lack of fatalities at the temple to effective security measures, stating, 'Had they not executed their responsibilities almost flawlessly, we would be discussing a significant tragedy involving children today.'
Moreover, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer commended the actions of the security personnel, stating, 'These heroes placed themselves in danger, confronting a suspect.'
On Sunday, US House Representative Adam Smith from Washington remarked on ABC’s This Week that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has increased the likelihood of politically driven lone wolf attacks in the US. He cautioned, 'While it may not have sparked the violence, we need to be ready for the potential outcomes.' Smith, who serves as the leading Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, warned that the conflict 'is certainly spreading at this time.'
