On Friday, the Israeli military reported executing an airstrike on a bridge located in southern Lebanon, a move that signifies a new phase in its ongoing military campaign against Hezbollah. This strike represents the first instance where Israel has publicly acknowledged targeting civilian infrastructure during its current operations.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the Zrariyeh bridge, which crosses the Litani River, was hit because it is a crucial passage utilized by Hezbollah militants for movement between northern and southern regions of Lebanon.
According to the military, Hezbollah had allegedly set up rocket launchers in the vicinity of the bridge and had engaged in hostilities against Israel from the area. The IDF emphasized that the bridge was instrumental for Hezbollah operatives in transferring arms and conducting assaults against Israeli territories, asserting that the airstrike was necessary to protect Israeli civilians from potential threats.
However, the military did not provide any evidence to back its claims regarding the bridge's use by Hezbollah fighters.
Earlier on the same day, reports from Lebanese state media indicated that a drone strike targeted a residential apartment in the Burj Hammoud area, situated on the northern edges of Beirut. This strike marked the first attack in this locality since the recent escalation began.
These strikes are part of a series of near-daily operations by Israeli forces throughout Lebanon this week, as the conflict deepens with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
The renewed violence follows Hezbollah's attacks initiated on March 2, which were characterized by the group as retaliation for the killing of Ali Khamenei at the commencement of the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.
The escalating cross-border violence has caused a significant humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, with reports indicating vast numbers of civilians being displaced as the airstrikes persist.
