In an uplifting event marking International Women’s Day, around 30 widows from the waterfront community of Makoko in Lagos received food donations on Thursday. This initiative was organized by IDA Beauty as part of their outreach to vulnerable families in the area.
The food distribution is aligned with this year's theme of International Women’s Day, "Give To Gain," promoting generosity and collaboration within communities.
The partnership involved the Tabitha-Kay Widow Care Foundation, which focuses on providing relief to those in need within this challenging environment. The food items included essentials such as rice, groundnut oil, spaghetti, salt, and tomato paste.
The beneficiaries, primarily engaged in small trading activities, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the organizers for their support. One of the recipients, Mariya Wenu, who sells food, commented, "I am happy. May God bless her. I have even prayed for her." Another recipient, Angelina Ajibade, called on the organizers to always remember them in their future efforts.
Margaret Andrew, a fish trader among the recipients, expressed her appreciation but added that she would value assistance in starting a new business venture, specifically in the soft drink industry. Sarah Johnson also voiced her thanks for the food support.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Idowu Adepeju, the founder of IDA Beauty, stated that International Women’s Day serves to honor the extraordinary strength of women, particularly young widows. "We recognize the silent strength required to rise each day and persevere," Ms. Adepeju remarked. She encouraged the women, saying their stories did not conclude with their losses.
Despite facing humanitarian challenges, exacerbated by recent government evictions leading to loss of homes, the beneficiaries demonstrated resilience and hope during the event. The day concluded with joyous dancing, symbolizing their unwavering spirit amid adversity.
