James Van Der Beek, famed for his lead role in the beloved teen drama 'Dawson's Creek,' has died at the age of 48.
His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, confirmed the news through a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram on Wednesday.
"He faced his last days with bravery, faith, and grace," she expressed. "There is much to share about his wishes, his love for humanity, and the importance of time. Those conversations will come in due time."
"For now, we request privacy as we mourn our dear husband, father, son, brother, and friend," she added.
In November 2024, Van Der Beek disclosed his diagnosis of stage 3 colorectal cancer. He mentioned receiving treatment privately while prioritizing his health and family during that time.
"I kept this to myself until now, focusing on treatment and honing in on my health more than ever before," he wrote in an Instagram update from November 3, 2024. "My family and I are incredibly grateful for all the love and support we have received."
He frequently shared updates about his cancer journey on social media, often expressing appreciation for his wife and children.
Van Der Beek gained prominence as Dawson Leery, a hopeful filmmaker in the WB’s 'Dawson’s Creek,' which debuted in 1998 and aired for six successful seasons. The show, set in a fictional coastal town in Massachusetts, also featured Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson, becoming an iconic teen drama of its time.
Reflecting on the series, he said in 2018, "The pilot we filmed in that small town for that budding network changed our lives and launched our careers."
The popularity of 'Dawson’s Creek' turned Van Der Beek into a teen sensation, leading to various film opportunities. He starred as a high school quarterback in the 1999 film 'Varsity Blues' and appeared in titles such as 'Scary Movie' (2000) and 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' (2001).
Following the conclusion of 'Dawson’s Creek' in 2003, he remained active in the television and film industries, making guest appearances on shows like 'Criminal Minds,' 'Ugly Betty,' 'How I Met Your Mother,' 'One Tree Hill,' 'Medium,' and 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent.'
In the early 2010s, he received acclaim for portraying a fictionalized version of himself in the ABC sitcom 'Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23,' showcasing a self-aware take on his own celebrity. He also starred in the CBS series 'CSI: Cyber' and the FX drama 'Pose.'
Born James David Van Der Beek on March 8, 1977, in Cheshire, Connecticut, he began his acting career as a child and made his professional debut in an off- Broadway performance of Edward Albee’s 'Finding the Sun.' Some of his early film roles include 'Angus' (1995) and 'I Love You, I Love You Not' (1996).
Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. He was previously married to actress Heather McComb.
