Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has asserted that the state government had ordered the closure of Jilli market five years ago. He stated that the market had become a prominent centre for insurgents and individuals supplying them with logistics.

Governor Zulum made these remarks while responding to the bombing incident that reportedly killed more than 50 people at the market on Saturday. The governor also issued a stern warning to residents against providing any form of aid, shelter, or logistical support to Boko Haram insurgents.

In a statement released on Sunday by his media aide, Dauda Iliya, Governor Zulum declared, "I have been properly briefed on the airstrike carried out by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai on Jilli market, a border town between Borno and Yobe states. Let me state categorically that the Borno State Government closed Jilli and Gazabure markets five years ago."

He added that he is engaged in continuous consultations with the Yobe State Government and military authorities regarding the incident.

Governor Zulum detailed that Borno State maintains a close working relationship with the military and other security agencies. This coordination is essential before any community is resettled or any market is reopened, particularly in areas previously affected by insurgency.

He reaffirmed his administration's steadfast commitment to protecting law- abiding citizens and continuing collaborative efforts with security agencies to re-establish lasting peace and stability throughout the state.

Furthermore, Zulum urged residents to remain alert and to support security agencies by sharing valuable information that can assist in ongoing military operations.
