The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has indicated that a primary focus of the House will be the amendment of the Electoral Act.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, Kalu also mentioned the intent to address certain provisions of the Constitution that are undergoing amendments.
He remarked, “This year, we have specific goals we aim to achieve, including the Electoral Act. In the coming days, we expect the Senate to perform its duties after we have conducted our own.”
Kalu continued by stating, “The budget is currently under review, and I am confident that, with the cooperation of various House committees, we will ensure due diligence is applied, so the budget serves as a practical resource for government agencies and the country as a whole.”
The Deputy Speaker assured that the House would rigorously scrutinize the 2026 Budget to guarantee it functions effectively for governance and national growth.
However, proceedings in the House were halted after Kalu informed members of the passing of several senators, leading to the adjournment of the session for a memorial honoring the three deceased Senators.
The departed senators were Godiya Akwashiki of Nasarawa North (serving from 2019 to 2023 and 2023 to 2025), Okechukwu Ezea of Enugu North (2023 to 2025), and John Kojo–Brambaifa of Bayelsa West (2003 to 2007).
Lawmakers are anticipated to resume full legislative sessions on Wednesday.
