The Kano State Hisbah Board reported that over 600 people were arrested during the Sallah festivities for offenses such as indecent dressing and immoral behaviour. In addition, the board successfully reunited 66 missing children with their families.
Dr. Mujahiddin Aminuddin, the Deputy Commander General of the Board, shared this information with Daily Trust on Monday, stating that the arrests were part of their initiative to maintain moral standards and cultural values during the celebrations.
To ensure effective monitoring of the Sallah festivities, Hisbah deployed more than 9,500 operatives throughout Kano.
Aminuddin noted that among those apprehended were 275 youths for what was termed "indecent barbing," 85 tricycle drivers for transporting female passengers beside them, 21 individuals wearing short knickers, and 286 women for inappropriate attire.
Additionally, a local government chairman was arrested at a hotel with minors without parental consent. The board subsequently contacted the parents to reunite them with their children before releasing those detained.
The Deputy Commander mentioned further incidents involving a couple engaged in violent acts, a youth accused of facilitating adultery and sodomy, a merchant found with weapons intended for thugs, and a sorcerer who allegedly married a woman without her family's consent.
Dr. Aminuddin also highlighted the success of the operation in reuniting 66 lost children with their parents and dispersing youths who attempted to host a party in Sabon Gari.
He emphasized that Sallah should be a time for reflection and seeking forgiveness, rather than engaging in activities that contradict Islamic teachings.
"All these activities are contrary to our cultural norms and traditions. We advise event planners to refrain from organizing events that violate our values, as Hisbah will vehemently oppose it. We also request the public to report any misconduct to aid in promoting better standards in Kano," he concluded.
