An early morning blaze has wreaked havoc at the Fatima Simra Multi-Purpose Market located in Dakata, Kano State, resulting in the destruction of no fewer than 50 shops.

Dauda Chula, who chairs the market's fire committee, informed reporters that the fire ignited at approximately 5:40 a.m. on Friday.

Chula explained that the affected section of the market primarily catered to small businesses engaged in oil production and the recycling of plastics and nylon, items that likely facilitated the rapid escalation of the fire.

Scene of the fire incident

"Our initial assessment indicates that around 50 shops have been destroyed, and the flames are still active," Chula stated on Friday morning. "We are currently waiting for personnel from the Kano State Fire Service to arrive."

He pointed out that relevant emergency response units had been alerted, as the delay in their arrival has led to frustration among local vendors.

Numerous traders expressed deep distress as they watched their sources of income engulfed in flames.

This incident marks the third significant fire outbreak in Kano State within a month, culminating in financial losses amounting to billions of naira.

The latest fire follows two incidents at Singa Market, where traders faced severe financial setbacks due to similar outbreaks occurring just weeks apart.

As of now, the extent of the damages and the presence of any casualties remain unverified. Attempts to reach Saminu Abdullahi, the spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, proved unsuccessful, and no official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the fire or the status of ongoing containment efforts has been released.
