The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equity and women's economic empowerment via the Gender Equity and Women Economic Empowerment (GEWEE) Coordination Committee.
At a strategic meeting organized by the ministry alongside Bridge Connect Africa Initiative, the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, emphasized this dedication.
The assembly convened essential stakeholders to assess previous efforts and devise an Action Plan for 2026.
Sani, who was represented by Permanent Secretary Muhammad Sambo Aliyu, indicated that the discussion was intended to enhance collaboration among stakeholders engaged in promoting gender equity within the state.
She recognized the progress achieved through reforms in policies, institutional fortification, and empowerment programs but highlighted the necessity to streamline ongoing initiatives for improved impact and sustainability.
Significant milestones mentioned included the adoption and application of the Women's Economic Empowerment policy framework, as well as targeted efforts that have assisted 400 victims of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
The commissioner urged participants to engage in discussions with innovative ideas, foster collaboration, and focus on results to guarantee tangible outcomes.
During the meeting, GEWEEDS Project Lead, Nethan Bako, pointed out that economic dependence is a significant factor contributing to gender-based violence in Kano State. He noted that the initiative collaborates with law enforcement, civil society organizations, development partners, and relevant government bodies to support sustainable economic empowerment and culturally appropriate business ventures.
He stressed that enhancing women's economic autonomy is pivotal to diminishing their susceptibility and breaking the cycle of violence, acknowledging the importance of coordinated efforts in achieving enduring transformations.
