A growing contingent of American celebrities, notably singer Katy Perry, has urged the public to speak out and engage with their representatives following the deaths of two US citizens at the hands of federal immigration agents in Minnesota during an intensified enforcement operation.
Perry took to her Instagram account on Monday, encouraging her followers to write to their respective US senators and advocate against allocating funds to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency operating under the Department of Homeland Security.
Actor Pedro Pascal, known for his role in "The Last of Us," shared illustrations of the deceased, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, on Instagram, accompanied by the statement: "Pretti Good reason for a national strike."
Singer Billie Eilish also utilized Instagram, referring to Pretti as "a real American hero" and imploring others to amplify their voices, questioning, "hey my fellow celebrities u gonna speak up? or".
The National Basketball Players Association issued a statement indicating that players "can no longer remain silent," asserting the need to defend freedom of expression and expressing solidarity with the protesters in Minnesota who are demanding accountability.
Officials from the Trump administration have asserted that the officers involved acted in self-defence. However, video footage from the incident sites has prompted scrutiny and triggered demonstrations across the nation.
